Mooncake — A new puppetry play by Shiny Heart Productions

Wed 7 Oct - Fri 9 Oct

One moon. Many stories. Far from home. Never alone.

Sam brought mooncakes to the bake sale. Nobody wanted any. Taj misses his nan. He hasn't told anyone how much.

In their backyard in Marrickville, as the afternoon turns gold, Sam and Taj look up at the moon together. And then, the banyan tree begins to rise — taking two 10 year old friends on an unforgettable adventure far from home, to feel a little less alone.

Mooncake takes children and families from a suburban backyard all the way to the moon — where they meet a Vietnamese woodcutter who never let go, a Chinese goddess who turned her loneliness into light, a Jade Rabbit who makes very questionable medicine, and a Greek immortal older than time. Where every mooncake ever placed on a windowsill and every wish ever whispered into the dark — turns out to have been received.

Told through exquisite puppetry, original music and the cultural stories our families carry - Mooncake is joyful and funny and quietly moving.

It is a show about feeling too different to belong, and about missing someone you love. About the stories our grandmothers carry and what happens when we finally listen. About looking up at the same moon and realising: we are never alone.

Sam enters holding the mooncake away from herself. She leaves holding it out to someone else. Every wish, every prayer and every memory sent upward has always been received by the one moon. And always will.

THREE SHOWS ONLY!

World Premiere: Wednesday 7 October · 1pm

Auslan Interpreted/Relaxed Performance: Wednesday 7 October · 4pm

Every Mooncake show welcomes every family. On Wednesday 7 October, our 4pm performance is Auslan interpreted and relaxed — designed for anyone who'd benefit from a more relaxed environment, including autistic patrons, those with sensory sensitivities, and anyone with additional needs.

Sound and lighting will be gently adjusted and you're welcome to move, make noise, or step out and back in whenever you need to — an usher will be close by if you'd like a hand.

An Auslan interpreter will be positioned at the front of the stage. Let our staff know when you arrive and they'll help you find a seat with a clear view.

Standard ticket pricing applies, with free tickets for companion card holders.

This performance is made possible through the support of Inner West Council's Cultural Connections grant. 💛
