DAME DORIS FITTON, AUSTRALIAN THEATRE’S FIRST LADY RETURNS

An historic one-time PROFESSIONAL PLAY READING of AN INDEPENDENT WOMAN by Australian playwright Justin Fleming recalling the extraordinary story of DORIS FITTON, actress and artistic director, founder and driving force behind the Independent Theatre for nearly 50 years. She famously produced a mix of the classics, contemporary and new, locally-written plays, providing unique opportunities for Australian actors, directors and designers, many of whom went on to stellar careers. For her heroic leadership against many obstacles, she was regarded, in her day, as the LEGENDARY ‘FIRST LADY’ OF AUSTRALIAN THEATRE and was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).

Deborah Mulhall directs a cast of six actors, with Michelle Robin Anderson in the mighty role of Dame Doris Fitton.
