Thu 5 Nov 11am - 12pm

435 Compton Rd, Brisbane

Queensland State Archives (QSA) invites you to the official opening of Riding the First Wave: Mid-19th century immigration from China.

Developed by historian Dr Hilda Maclean and artist Dr Pamela See (Xue Mei-Ling) in partnership with the Harry Gentle Resource Centre Griffith University, this new exhibition explores the lives and legacy of the first Chinese labourers who arrived in Moreton Bay from Amoy (present-day Xiamen) between 1847 and 1853. Featuring archival records, contemporary paper-cut artworks and stories shared by descendants, the exhibition reveals a little-known chapter of Queensland's history and celebrates the contribution these early migrants made to Queensland's development and identity.

Riding the first wave brings together historical records and contemporary artistic interpretation to explore themes of migration, resilience and belonging.
