Black Dingo

Black Dingo is a cross-genre miscellany of African Australian short stories by Flame Tree Publishing. The collection embraces multi-award-winning author Eugen Bacon’s hybridity as an African Australian who is ‘betwixt’, ‘a sum of parts’ – she is a mother, a daughter, a sister, a woman, a writer, an author, an editor, a scholar and a friend. She is many, and it reflects in this collection that transverses transformative stories of longing and belonging, unlimited futures, a collision of worlds, mythology, and more.

Featuring a black heroine, in each story is a cameo or secondary character of a dingo. Black Dingo is sponsored through Eugen’s Otherwise Fellowship awarded by the Otherwise Motherboard; this speculative fiction cases black people in bold and evocative text, at times deeply flawed but potentially redeemable protagonists in rich hues of blackness and light.

The literary strange unravels in these genre-bending Afro-irreal tales of longing and belonging, unlimited futures, a collision of worlds and everything in between: rich hues of shadow and light.

Crimson in Quietus

Meet a new kind of speculative literary mystery where the investigator is not a detective, but a sound scientist. Crimson in Quietus is the newest Sauútiverse offering from a renowned genre bender and recent Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award recipient.

The stories-within-a-story, as we chart the paths of Muso’mi, Fin’Lei and T, borrows from Tasmania's natural beauty of rocky outcrops, stalactite and stalagmite caves, cascading waterfalls, rivulet trails and fiery auroras.

The novel's development was supported by the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund as part of University of Tasmania’s three-month Hedberg Fellowship.

This inaugural Sauútiverse book includes a glossary of Bantu, Afrocentric and made-up words from this cross-cultural tale written in gorgeous lyrical language packed with emotion.

About the author

Eugen Bacon is an African Australian author. She is a Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award recipient, a British Fantasy, Ignyte, Locus, Foreword Indies and BSFA Award winner. She’s also a twice World Fantasy and Shirley Jackson Award finalist, and a finalist in the Philip K. Dick Awards and the Nommo Awards for speculative fiction by Africans. Eugen is an Otherwise Fellow, and was announced on the honor list for ‘doing exciting work in gender and speculative fiction’.
