Books@Stones event: Amidst the Jewels of Us by Jane Thompson

Thu 12 Nov 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Books@Stones, Brisbane

Join us on Thursday 12 November, 6:30pm for a special in-conversation event with Jane Thompson (Veda Laferne Studios) discussing Amidst the Jewels of Us.

“How does the clock stay connected to the sun?” asked a young and curious little mind. And, just for a moment, I imagined a world where all the clocks were energetically charged by the sun, layering a natural rhythm and pulse over everything and changing the rhythm of our day.

Amidst the Jewels of Us features original artwork by Jane Thompson accompanied by the poetic voice of Veda Laferne.

Among these pages are words to gently guide you out of the confines and structure of time, and into the more natural and meandering pace of your day. Each poem and artwork is placed at an hour of this thing we call a “day” and offers a suggestion to expand our thoughts of ourselves, to consider the natural rhythm of the sun, the moon, and of us and to uncover the secret teachings that exist in any moment, amidst the jewels of us.

24 poems and artwork to invite you to linger, expand, and connect to a more natural pace of being.

Jane Thompson is a Brisbane artist and painter who writes under the moniker Veda Laferne. A passionate storyteller from childhood, Jane found writing to be a natural way of being—a space for observational musings and imaginative ideas, which she often shared with her peers on the local school bus. These days, Jane writes three pages of stream-of-consciousness prose each day, clearing the way for unobstructed expression in both her writing and her artwork. She has sustained this practice for the past five years, and through it rediscovered a writing voice that carries poetry, wisdom and subconscious insight, resonating distinctly with her paintings. Jane affectionately came to know this voice as Veda Laferne, her brave and imaginative muse. Together, Veda and Jane shape their inner worlds through paper and pen, brush and canvas, leading to their first publication, Amidst the Jewels of Us. Featuring original paintings paired with corresponding poems, the book is an unwavering companion, giving voice to the hopes, fears and optimism we create from within.
