Death and Dracula: A Halloween Concert with the Yakamoz Ensemble

Sat 31 Oct 8pm - 10pm

21 Shepherd, Sydney

This Halloween, step into the shadows with the Yakamoz Ensemble for an unforgettable evening of music, poetry, and storytelling at the Inner West's most enchanting venue, 21 Shepherd

Journey through themes of mortality, terror, beauty, and redemption in two extraordinary works: Franz Schubert's Death and the Maiden and Philip Glass's Dracula. From haunting melodies and unsettling harmonies to moments of profound tenderness, this immersive performance explores the many faces of the macabre.

The evening will also feature poetry and storytelling from the Inner West's own Clown Bride (Josh Shipton), along with prizes for the best costumes, making this a Halloween celebration unlike any other.

The Music

Schubert: Death and the Maiden

One of the great masterpieces of chamber music, Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in D minor draws its name from his song Der Tod und das Mädchen (Death and the Maiden), based on a poem by Matthias Claudius.

The quartet confronts the listener with violence, anguish, resignation, and ultimately acceptance. Its famous second movement transforms the song's chilling dialogue between a terrified young woman and Death into a set of variations of extraordinary emotional depth. After a restless scherzo, the work concludes with a feverish tarantella, a whirlwind often described as a dance with death itself.

Glass: Dracula

Philip Glass composed his score for Tod Browning's legendary 1931 film Dracula, a classic that originally lacked a dedicated musical soundtrack.

Rather than relying on conventional horror tropes, Glass chose the intimacy and expressive power of a string quartet to evoke the mysterious world of 19th-century Gothic fiction. The result is hypnotic, atmospheric, and hauntingly beautiful, bringing new life to one of cinema's most iconic tales of the undead.
