With our November book group taking place just a few days after Halloween, we'll be discussing the classic ghost story The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Published in 1898, it quickly became James' most popular work of short fiction.
The gothic horror novella tells of a young governess who arrives at a remote country estate to care for two children, only to become convinced that supernatural forces haunt the grounds. Even its author found it terrifying: “I had to correct the proofs of my ghost story last night,” he told poet Edmund Gosse, “and when I had finished them I was so frightened that I was afraid to go upstairs to bed!”
The group previously read Henry James' The Portrait of a Lady way back at the beginning of 2014.

Plus, because it's in the public domain, there are a number of audiobooks on YouTube - perhaps the perfect way to experience a ghost story...
Do you keep meaning to read more of the great classics? At Wellington Classic Literature Club, we read works that have stood the test of time, whether they were written in 1780, 1880 or even 1980. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month.
