2026 Everyday Strength - Term 4

Fri 9 Oct 9:30am - Thu 17 Dec 10:30am

Cheltenham Hall, Melbourne

Everyday Strength is a practical, low-impact strength class designed to help participants maintain the muscle strength they need for everyday life as they get older.

As we age, maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important for everyday activities such as getting up from a chair, climbing stairs, carrying shopping, reaching for something on a shelf, getting in and out of a car, and maintaining good balance. Regular strength exercises can help us stay physically capable, confident and independent for longer.

The class will use light hand weights, bodyweight exercises and chairs for support, making the exercises accessible and adaptable for different abilities and fitness levels. Exercises should focus on the major muscle groups, particularly the legs, hips, core, back, shoulders and arms, while also incorporating balance and stability.

The aim isn't to build large muscles or make the class feel like a gym workout. Instead, the focus is on functional strength — training the muscles we rely on every day. Movements such as controlled sit-to-stands, supported squats, leg raises, heel raises, lifting and carrying exercises, upper-body strengthening and balance work can all help participants maintain the physical ability needed to manage daily activities safely and independently.

The chair provides support when needed, while the light weights allow participants to gradually challenge their muscles without requiring heavy gym equipment. Exercises can be modified so participants can work at a level that feels appropriate for them.

Overall, Everyday Strength is about keeping our bodies strong and capable for everyday living — helping participants maintain strength, balance, confidence and independence as they age.
