Introspection is both a means of challenging patriarchy and a form of resistance in itself. While self-reflection can expose internalized biases and help dismantle systems of inequality, patriarchal norms have often denied wāhine the freedom to develop and express an authentic inner life, instead encouraging self-objectification and guilt.

Reclaiming the space for honest, nuanced self-examination is therefore a political act. By critically examining inherited beliefs and asserting their own experiences and perspectives, wāhine resist historic power imbalances and affirm the value of their inner lives.

Immersive Environments acknowledges its privilege and the role it can play in helping dismantle patriarchal structures. Introspection is an opportunity to lead by example by championing inclusivity and diversity within a community that has historically been shaped by male-dominated power structures.

‘Qtopia NZ’, an advocacy, social change, and social support service for the whole LGBTQIA+ rainbow community, based in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
