This is not a playlist, and it is not a tribute night. It is two of Sydney’s genuine reggae broadcasters — men who have spent decades putting this music on Australian airwaves — bringing radio-honed selection to a country dance floor. Grassroots, positive, and built on rhythm and respect. ✨

Jamaican born, London raised, Sydney based since 1986. When Ted arrived, reggae had almost no place on Australian radio — one weekly slot on community airwaves and nowhere to dance. He was told a reggae club would never work here. He opened one anyway: Power Cuts, Sydney’s first reggae club. From 1991 he took the music onto community radio at 2RRR, earned his advanced presenter’s diploma from the Australian Music & TV School in 1997, and has spent the decades since programming and promoting reggae across Australia — today through his own station, Power Cuts Radio.

Expect the full arc from a selector who lived it: foundation roots and consciousness, the sweet side — lovers rock, the slow burn of the dance — and dancehall from the golden era through to the releases he uploaded this week. Ted does not guess what lands. He has been reading Australian dance floors since before most of them existed. 🇯🇲

Alfonso Mosquera — Altafari — was born in Cali, Colombia and has spent his Australian career at the crossroads of Afro-Caribbean and Latin sound. He came up as an MC on Sydney’s sound systems — Jah Baya Sounds of Revolution, Rebel Soul System, Basslines Crew and others — and has shared stages with touring international acts including Third World, Luciano and Arrested Development. He is also a founding voice in Cumbiamuffin, Sydney’s first cumbia orchestra.

On 88.9FM Radio Skid Row — Sydney’s home of reggae, world and independent music since 1983 — Altafari hosts a world music show built on new releases, interviews with international musicians and news from the local scene. Behind the decks he moves the way the show does: Afro-Caribbean roots into reggae and dancehall, then reggaetón, cumbia and Afrobeats. Cali to Kingston to Lagos, with a 7-inch vinyl collection deep enough to prove every step.

GETTING THERE

The Goulburn Club sits at 19 Market Street, right in the Centre of town, directly across from Belmore Park. Look for the historic stone frontage and archway — it is one of the oldest buildings on the street and you cannot really miss it.

▸ From Canberra and the ACT: about one hour north on the Hume Highway (M31). An easy there-and-back, or make a night of it. Regional Travel | transportnsw.info

▸ From Campbelltown and South West Sydney: around one hour forty minutes south on the Hume. From Sydney CBD, allow roughly two and a half hours.

▸ From the Southern Tablelands and Highlands: Crookwell, Marulan, Gunning, Collector, Taralga, Yass, Bungendore, Braidwood, Moss Vale and Bowral are all twenty minutes to an hour away.

▸ By train: Goulburn is on the NSW TrainLink (Regional Travel | transportnsw.info) Southern Highlands Line from Campbelltown via Moss Vale, and XPT services stop here. Check the timetable carefully — you are unlikely to get a train home after 11:30 PM, so plan an overnight stay if you are coming by rail.

▸ Parking: free on-street parking along Market Street and around Belmore Park, and an easy walk from anywhere in the town centre.

▸ Staying over: motels, pubs and guesthouses are within walking distance. If you are drinking, book a room or a driver — late-night taxis in Goulburn are limited, so sort your ride before the night, not after it.

▸ Licensed venue with a bar serving boutique beers and wines. No BYO. Responsible service of alcohol applies.
