The PORKAGANDA documentary sits under Animal Liberation's Pigs Without Borders campaign, exploring the history of industrial pig farming expanding across Australia, and the exploitation of millions of Australian pigs as commodified food 'products'.
The campaign and documentary will encourage us to consider the broad issues holistically including the 'enablers', those who drive and prop up this unsustainable food system built on mass animal exploitation – governments’ and key decision makers, animal agribusinesses, animal welfare agencies, approved farming schemes and the retailers. These enablers each in their own way deny the consumer's right to know with full transparency to allow meaningful individual informed choice.
PORKAGANDA has been two years in the making and includes extensive filming and interviews with more than 25 individuals and organisations across Australia and around the world, providing unique perspectives and expertise across the connected issues involving, animal welfare, environment and people including the legislation, the conflicts, the power of big Ag, and the home and origins of the Save Movement and the Plant Based Treaty in Toronto, Canada. Extensive research and review of Animal Liberation's 50 years of historical archives combined with the political history, reviews and inquiries, adds great depth to the documentary.
The documentary applies an objective wide lens to the many victims and casualties - the pigs, the environment and the multifaceted people issues covering public health, the workers, local communities and the animal activists. We explore the planning laws, the land use conflicts, Ag Gag and the ten-year grassroots battle against Blantyre Farms opposing the development application for an additional mega piggery in the Hilltops region, and the risks and impacts to the local rural community, immediate neighbours and First Nations people.
We’ve delved into the similar significant environmental risks and impacts from industries like coal and other forms of mining which draw strong support from environmental groups. Are our taste buds and dietary habits influencing our preparedness to take action or change our everyday behaviours?
In contrast to only speaking to the converted, PORKAGANDA seeks to engage a new audience, asking viewers to absorb the facts, reach their own conclusions, and make personal change.
