Mau Rākau (adults)

Sat 17 Oct 10am - 4pm

Hakatere Marae, Timaru

Join us for a full-day wānanga to learn and experience Mau Rākau – the traditional Māori art of weaponry.

Guided by experienced Mau Rākau kaiako, Brad Ta'avao, you’ll develop skills in handling the taiaha and patu, explore the tikanga (protocols) that underpin the practice, and learn the stories and values woven into this taonga tuku iho (treasured heritage).

Open to adults and youth (14+) of all genders and cultures, this wānanga will strengthen your body, mind, and connection to te ao Māori. Please note: On Sunday October 18 there is an afternoon mau rākau wānanga for tamariki & rangatahi from 9 years old up. Details here.

We start with a mihi whakatau (formal welcome) at 10am, so please ensure you are at Hakatere Marae by 10, ready to be welcomed on as a group.

Whether you’re a complete beginner, attended other wānanga with Brad or looking to deepen your knowledge, you’ll leave with new skills, confidence, and appreciation for this rich Māori tradition.

What to bring?
