Willunga Circle of Friends Film Night

Thu 24 Sep 7pm - 9:30pm

Aldinga Arts Eco Village, Sharing Shed, Adelaide

About the film and its directors

Muzafar Ali and Jolyon Hoff have been friends and colleagues for over ten years and met while

Muzafar was living as a refugee in Indonesia.

Together they support refugee-led education and use their friendship to educate each

other about their different experiences. This exchange informs their films, art and exhibitions as t

they bring their communities closer together.

We Are Not Powerless is their third feature documentary together and will again unite the refugee

and non-refugee communities around a remarkable story of resilience, hope, and connection.

Director’s Statement

Through this film we want to humanise an intensely complicated global geo-political story, and bring

the voice of refugees into the cinema. Reflecting ten years of footage – over which time a student

becomes a teacher, or a teacher becomes an international advocate – the film illustrates how a

small act of defiance grew around the world and proved that there are alternative solutions to the

global migration crisis. We are excited and honoured to be able to invite Australian and global

audiences inside this hidden world.

Admission is free, but bookings are essential as seating is limited.

Donations will be gratefully accepted at the door to help support of refugees and asylum seekers.

A variety of hot drinks and cakes will be available before, during and after the screening, also by donation.
