Bizet’s Carmen returns in a new production directed by Laura Hansford. Set in Seville in 1825 and viewed through maximalist surrealism, it follows Carmen’s refusal to be possessed and the tragic love story that unfolds around desire, jealousy, freedom and fate. The score moves from the overture through sensual dances, love songs and large-scale choruses. Charlotte Kelso plays Carmen, with Samuel Dale Johnson as Escamillo and Gerard Schneider as Don José. The performance runs for approximately three hours, including a 20-minute interval.
