Meet Abuela. She's gathered her grandkids around, and she's about to do what grandmothers in Mexico have done for generations: to pass down the stories she once learned from her own family. Not just any stories; five legendary tales, each one carrying you to a different corner of Mexico; Yucatán, Veracruz, the Huasteca region, Chihuahua, and Jalisco.

This journey takes place on that one night of the year when the people we´ve lost feel a little closer and are welcomed back through memory and celebration: the Day of the Dead. Moving through remembrance, traditional folklore and costumes that transform with every act, la Ofrenda lands on something that every family can relate to, no matter where they´re from.

Behind La Ofrenda is Son de México; a Melbourne-based, community-led Mexican cultural arts organisation that's spent years bringing folkloric dance, cultural celebrations and community events to life across Victoria. This isn't a costume party dressed up as culture. It's a bilingual theatrical journey, built act by act on real oral storytelling traditions and paired with region-specific folklore dance; created by the community that actually lives this tradition.

Why This Story, Why Now

Día de los Muertos has become increasingly visible around the world, Australia included; but so much of what people see stops at sugar skulls, face paint and decorative motifs. What often gets left out is everything that actually gives the tradition meaning: its spiritual significance, the diversity of customs across Mexico's regions, the oral storytelling that keeps it alive, the folklore and mythology behind it, and the deeper values of remembrance and family it's really about.
