What if Mozart wasn’t the only musical genius in the family?

Maria Anna “Nannerl” Mozart was a brilliant musician who toured Europe as a child alongside her younger brother Wolfgang, astonishing audiences with her talent. Yet while his name became immortal, hers largely disappeared from musical history.

Inspired by the award-winning documentary Mozart’s Sister, The Maria Anna Mozart Concert Tour brings her extraordinary story back to the concert hall through an immersive combination of live orchestral music, film and narration. The national tour was created not simply to rediscover Maria Anna, but to ask a bigger question: whose music gets remembered, performed and celebrated — and whose is lost?

For this special Rangebow Festival performance, the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra performs acclaimed Australian composer Jessica Wells’ original score for Mozart’s Sister live, accompanied by visuals from director Madeleine Hetherton-Miau and live narration. Wells’ score sits at the heart of the national concert tour, which is being performed by orchestras around Australia.

The story has particular resonance today. In 2025, just 14.6% of works performed by Australian orchestras were composed by female or gender-diverse composers. The Maria Anna Mozart Concert Tour responds to that imbalance by using the story of a woman whose extraordinary talent was constrained by the conventions of her time to shine a light on the voices still missing from concert stages today.

The Rangebow Festival joins a national program of performances that includes Sydney Youth Orchestras and Symphony Central Coast, with the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra presenting the work in October.
